What is it?
This is an optional tool that allows you to view the IRS tax information
you need to complete your FAFSA. You will also have the option to
securely transfer your IRS information into your FAFSA.
Why should I use it?
This tool will save you time and increase the accuracy of your FAFSA
information.
Who can use it?
Students or parents who meet the following criteria will be presented
with the option to view their IRS information:
- You filed a 2008 tax return.
- You have a valid Social Security Number (SSN).
- You have a Federal Student Aid PIN. If you do not have a PIN, you will be given the option to apply for one.
- Your marital status has not changed since December 31, 2008.
Who should not use it?
We recommend that students or parents who meet the following criteria
not use this tool:
- You filed an amended tax return for 2008.
- You did not file a Federal IRS tax return for 2008.
- Your 2008 IRS tax filing status is married filing separately.
In these instances, the IRS tax information may not completely reflect what you need to report on your FAFSA.
How does it work?
Step 1: Enter your PIN and click Link To IRS
- Your FAFSA will be saved and a new browser window will open to the IRS Web site.
Step 2: On the IRS Web site, enter additional information and click Submit
- Once your identity is validated, your IRS tax information will display.
Step 3: On the IRS Web site, click Transfer Now
- Your saved FAFSA will open and your IRS tax information will display throughout the FAFSA with the notation "Transferred from the IRS".
What if I do not want to transfer my IRS tax information?
You may view your IRS tax information but choose not to transfer the
information into your FAFSA.
If you do not want to use this tool at all, you may skip the option.
If I am married, can I view my spouse's tax information?
Yes. If your 2008 IRS tax filing status is married filing jointly:
- Enter your PIN to view information from a joint tax return.
- Either your mother or your father can enter his or her PIN to view information from a joint tax return.
No. If you are married and filed taxes separately from your spouse, you can only view your own tax information. Therefore we recommend you not use this tool since the IRS tax information may not completely reflect what you need to report on your FAFSA.
Can I use this tool if I am married and filed taxes separately from my spouse?
We recommend you not use this tool.
If you are married and filed taxes separately from your spouse, you will only be able to view your own tax information. Therefore we recommend you not use this tool since the IRS tax information may not completely reflect what you need to report on your FAFSA.
Can I use this tool if I filed an amended tax return?
We recommend you not use this tool.
You will only be able to view the information from your original 2008 tax return. Therefore we recommend you not use this tool since the IRS tax information will not reflect the amendment to your original 2008 tax return.
Can I use this tool if I filed a tax return outside the US?
If you did not file a Federal IRS tax return, you cannot use this tool
because there will be no information for you to view.
If you filed both a Federal IRS tax return and a foreign return, we recommend you not use this tool since the IRS tax information may not completely reflect what you need to report on your FAFSA.
