This is question 53 on the FAFSA.

The response should be Yes if:

• Both of the student's parents are deceased and the student does not have an adoptive parent, or
• Both of the student's parents are deceased, but the student has legal guardians, or
• The student is currently a ward of the court or was a ward of the court at age 18, or
• The student is currently a dependent of the court.

The response should be No if the student is not a ward of the court or was not a ward of the court at age 18. A student is not considered a ward of the court based solely on incarceration.

The response cannot be blank.
