Reapplying for Federal Student Aid

Previous

You must apply for federal student aid for every school year that you attend. To reapply, you can use either a Renewal FAFSA or a regular FAFSA. The Renewal FAFSA requests the same information as a regular FAFSA, but it already contains most of the information you provided on the FAFSA last year. Simply updating the information for the new school year on a Renewal FAFSA may be faster. However, the renewal application is available solely for your convenience. If you prefer to start fresh with a new FAFSA, you are free to do so.

To reapply, you should submit only one application per academic year, using one of the following:

1. Renewal FAFSA

If you applied for financial aid last year and meet certain conditions, the U.S. Department of Education will send you an electronic notification for a Renewal FAFSA on the Web. Here are the available renewal applications:

Electronic
Renewal FAFSA on the Web (PIN required)
Renewal FAFSA en español (PIN required)

2. Regular FAFSA

A renewal application is not the only option for reapplying. You can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply or reapply for federal aid. Here are the available applications:

Electronic Paper
FAFSA on the Web FAFSA
FAFSA on the Web en español FAFSA en español

3. You can reapply for financial aid through the school's financial aid office if the school participates in Electronic Data Exchange (EDE). You should contact the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend for more information.
