You must report your marital status as of today. If you are married (and not separated) you must file as married. If you are engaged to be married, you must file as single.
Marital status cannot be projected in the future and should not be changed or updated after the application is processed. Your marital status should only be changed if it was entered incorrectly on your original application.
According to the Defense of Marriage Act (1996),"...the word ‘marriage’ means a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word ‘spouse’ refers to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife." Therefore, same-sex unions are not considered marriages for federal purposes, including the FAFSA.
